Why Decluttering is ESSENTIAL

Clutter clutter clutter. It’s a MAJOR eyesore and headache. It can impact your physical and mental health and leave you feeling more stressed and frustrated. Decluttering is absolutely essential if you want your home to be comfortable, safe, peaceful, and clean. But, where do you begin? What if you have piles of stuff just laying around in almost every room?

We understand that decluttering can take some time, and it can be stressful if you have a lot of things to sort through and clear out. Not everything you want to get rid of needs to go to the dump; you likely have some items that can be donated for reuse. We have put together a simple list of tips that can help you get started with decluttering today.

Tip #1: Take Baby Steps

Decluttering is a skill that takes time to develop, so be patient with yourself. It requires self-discipline and some serious motivation to keep your home clutter free (trust us, we understand). Our first recommendation: start small and take baby steps. How about starting with one room and focusing on that one room for a week? Or, you can focus on several rooms for 15 minutes each. Whichever technique you prefer, grab two boxes or two bags, one for donations and one for the trash. As you go through the items, sort them into these two categories depending on their condition.

Tip #2: But Do You Really Need That?

Be honest with yourself. Pick up each item and ask yourself, “When was the last time I used this?” If you can’t remember the last time you used it, then you need to decide whether it will be donated or tossed. Next you need to ask yourself what condition the item is in and whether someone else will benefit from it. If it’s in decent condition, then donate! Donating will make you feel good knowing that your items will not go to waste.

Tip #3: Sanitize & Organize

Sanitize and organize as you declutter. If you’re clearing out smaller spaces like closets or cabinets, we suggest completely clearing everything out so you can sort through each item one at a time. This helps you stay organized as you go. Then, go back to tip #2 and ask yourself that all important question: “Do I even use this anymore?” If the answer is no, either toss or donate it. Then, for the items you do want to keep, why not clean or dust them before putting them back? If you’re decluttering your bathroom cabinets, for example, grab a sanitizing wipe or dust cloth and give each item a good cleaning so you can have a decluttered and clean/dust-free space. If you’re clearing out your closet, why not dust the shelves before putting items back? Just a thought…

If you’re clearing out your outdoor living areas such as your patio, you can also consider cleaning as you declutter. Power washing is a good exterior home washing solution!

Tip #4: Make it Fun

Decluttering can be fun if you let it! Make it fun and get creative with your storage plan. You don’t have to be a super creative person to make this enjoyable. But, why not consider buying some nice storage boxes or containers to keep your things safe and organized? This could help make your decluttering a little more fun and bearable. Once you decide which items you love, use, and want to keep, you can store them in nice containers that match your home’s style.

Tip #5: Remember the Purpose of Each Room

What do you use each room for? As you go through your decluttering process, keeping in mind how and what you use each space for will help you decide which items need to stay and which can either be kept somewhere else or donated/tossed. Ask yourself what each space is used for: watching tv and relaxing, eating, studying and working, sleeping, etc. Then, decide which items you need to keep in that room to serve that purpose.
