What is World Cleanup Day?

In 2008, 50,000 people in Estonia came together and worked hard to clean up the entire country in only a few hours. This one act inspired the rest of the world, and World Cleanup Day began. Since then, millions of people all over the globe have participated in this initiative; it has brought together so many people of different backgrounds, economic and political standing, religious beliefs, and life circumstances into one united effort to take care of the planet.

This annual event is overseen by the Let’s Do It World (LDIW) organization. This organization of remarkable people leads over 150 countries that participate in World Cleanup Day. The leaders have the responsibility to provide resources and assistance unique to each country’s specific cleanup needs.

In 2021, YOU can have a share in this momentous event. Be among the millions who come together to clean up our home. But it doesn’t have to be (and shouldn’t be) a one-day effort. Keeping our home clean is a daily responsibility each of us has and should take seriously. Just like we need to keep our homes clutter free, it’s important to keep the earth clutter free. Let’s talk more about this.

The Importance of Keeping the Earth Clean

There are mannnyy reasons why it’s important to keep our earth clean. It reduces pollution, conserves natural resources, and makes the community more environmentally aware, which allows for long-term benefits. Simply picking up litter and disposing of junk properly can have a large impact on the overall environment. You can have a share in this with your daily choices and by getting involved in this global effort!

Get Involved in World Cleanup Day This Year!

This year, it falls on September 18. There are many ways to get involved, even before the event! Wherever you go, you can take some gloves and a bag and pick up trash as you come across it each day. You can keep supplies in your car. According to the official site of World Cleanup Day, cigarette butts are the #1 type of litter that is collected on this day. So, why not take the initiative and pick these up when you see them? Another way to get involved is by contacting your country leader to learn more about volunteering. Or, you can donate to the cause!
